No prisoners are taken in this manga series about a murderous elite school: the young average student Makoto Naegi is incredibly happy when he wins admission to Hope's Peak Academy through a lottery ticket. At the prestigious private school, only the best of the best are accepted: super-geniuses, super-athletes, super-idols, gang leaders and computer nerds.
But Makoto's happiness is short-lived, as he soon becomes part of a murderous game: together with fourteen other students, he is held captive by the sadistic teddy bear Monokuma, who pretends to be the school's director. There is only one cruel way to escape the situation: You have to kill one of your classmates and not get caught... Otherwise you'll be killed yourself. If the rest of the community fails to identify the real culprit, they in turn must die.
The series adaptation is based on the visual novel "Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc" and, like so many anime productions, is by no means made for children, as it falls somewhere between the genres mystery, horror and thriller. The basic constellation of a wild bunch of imprisoned people who have to submit to a murderous game in which either you or the others die is somewhat reminiscent of the South Korean hit series "Squid Game". The international success of the series surprised the makers, who had originally conceived the video game adaptation "Danganronpa - The Animation" for Japanese television, but were able to win fans worldwide with the exciting and entertaining series.
