Claire (Catherine Frot) is a midwife with heart and soul. As the years go by, however, she finds herself increasingly confronted with the modern, impersonal methods of hospitals, which value efficiency more than Catherine's empathy. She begins to question herself and her abilities. Then one day she receives a call from Beatrice (Catherine Deneuve), the frivolous and flamboyant former mistress of Catherine's late father. Beatrice has important news and, having disappeared without a trace 30 years ago, now desperately wants to see Catherine again.
