Full of pity, fortune teller Rosa (Anne Bancroft) gives shy biochemist Paul an ominous love potion to take home. After all, the permanent single's palm lines don't promise a woman in his life, even in the long term. Paul is skeptical and first gives the tincture to his cat, who is subsequently swarmed by all the cats in the neighborhood. Together with his clever but inconspicuous colleague Diane (Sandra Bullock), a comparative psychobiologist with whom Paul is secretly in love, the two of them test the potion - on outsiders, of course. Diane turns into a beautiful swan and becomes a serious wife option for her on-off affair Gary. Paul, too, can hardly save himself from sexual advances from the world of women. In order to win back his idolized lady, who has been shielded by his rival, Paul now only needs an antidote, or rather a second love tincture... In this literally enchanting romcom, Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan play two biochemistry nerds who don't quite have the right chemistry at first. Before the two find each other as a couple-to-be, they first have to emancipate themselves from their new, idolized "selves" and learn to look at the bottom of their hearts again. The title and basic idea of this turbulent movie are based on the song "Love Potion No. 9". It was first released by The Clovers in 1959 before becoming a veritable hit in 1964 in a version by The Searchers.
